It’s after midnight, 12:36 to be exact, and I am only just now getting in all due to brilliance on my part. At lunchtime I came home and found Erica (my best friend who lives in the apartment next door) in my apartment searching frantically for a phone book. She had to be at work shortly and her car died out in the parking lot. I told her, no worries, she could drop me off at work and borrow my car. As luck would have it, I left my cell phone in the car as she drove away. No problem, I called matt from work and he was able to pick me up at 5. It wasn’t until we were debating on going to his house or mine that I realized I had left all my keys on my keychain, including the keys to my apartment. This can no longer be blamed on bad luck but pure stupidity on my part. Erica works until 11:30 p.m. and then drives a half hour to get home. So, I am finally able to get into my apartment now.
I’m about to hit the pillow, but before I do so, I thought I would share a little something about myself. I wake up just about every single morning with a tune in my head. I only realized how often this happens recently. I knew I often had songs in my head, but I didn’t realize until I started keeping track that it is almost every single morning. Sometimes I just have very vague parts of songs, either a certain chorus and no lyrics, or maybe very little music but a strong sense of the lyrics, and if I don’t immediately try to solve the mystery of what the song is then it is lost forever. It is kind of like a dream in that way, if you’ve ever tried to keep a dream journal you will know that if you don’t immediately try to recall it upon waking it will be lost forever. I will have a line of lyrics in my head and have to think “is it a man who sings this song? Is it a sad song? Are there any connotations I have with this song that might lead to figuring out what it is?” Many times I am able to google it and come up with the song. Other times the song is very strong and obvious and I will have it in my head all day long, sometimes so much so that I wake up with the same song all week long. The songs vary from songs that I obviously recall hearing the day before to songs I can’t remember hearing for ages. The songs will be in my head so strong when I wake that sometimes I think they are playing in the background of my dreams like a sountrack. So, you know how everyone always says they wish they could add a sountrack record to their real life, it is kind of like my subconcious mind does that during my dreams.
Here is a collection of songs I woke to for one week:
- David Bowie – Dance Magic Dance (from Labyrinth)
- Sugar Ray – Personal Space Invaders
- Van Morrison – Into the Mystic – with a focus on the lyrics “and when that foghorn blows, I’ll be coming home”
- Evan Dando – The Ballad of El Goodo – with a focus on the lyrics “I’ve been broken down and busted” and “Hold on”
- Evan Rachel Wood – Hold Me Tight (from the Across the Universe soundtrack)
- Michael Penn – I can tell
- Elvis Costello – Allison
